Cut & bake

I caught up with some much needed crafting this week and oh how I’ve missed it! With some Fimo clay leftovers, my rolling pin and cookie cutters, I set to work and made some festive inspired tree decorations. I discovered that a straw makes the perfect hole-piercing tool, bake for 30 minutes and voila!

I love having a reason to make something, so I’m looking forward to getting my craft-on over the next few weeks.

Starry, starry night

I have really loved autumn this year (despite still struggling with the nights drawing in so early!) This change in the seasons is always my favourite and I've made the most of it; lots of walks in the park, crafting for Halloween and going to see fireworks with my nearest and dearest. I've also used the cold weather as an excuse to spend many cosy, lazy nights in front of the telly with a mug of hot chocolate.

But with Christmas just around the corner, here at Cut & Stick we're getting ready for a frenzy of crafting as we make and be merry using the festive season as the perfect inspiration. Once December is upon us, we'll be sharing our ideas, hand made presents, cards and lots of other festive crafty-ness with you right here.

Happy Halloween

Here at Cut & Stick HQ we've been busy crafting for Halloween; from pumpkin carving to lino cutting, sewing and printing, we've been having a lot of fun creating a whole host of spooky bits and bobs to get us ready for Halloween.

We have hand printed cobweb wrapping paper, made paper pumpkins (which are super easy to do) and created Trick or Treat matchboxes, which contain either a handmade spooky ghost or super-cute pumpkin.

Halloween is the perfect excuse to get your craft on!

Spud you like

Take a potato (or few), some paint, paper, blank cards, brown wrap, gift tags - whatever you have to hand and lose yourself in the innocent art of potato printing.

Simple geometric shapes are easiest to carve into the spud and look really good when repeated... think circles to make big dotty gift wrap, triangles repeated into patterns on cards, simple hearts printed on crisp white tags ... you get the picture. Have fun getting your print on!

We heart our crafters

Here’s a few pics of our crafters hard at work at our ‘tea and biscuit’ themed craft on Monday night.  We had an awesome time making biscuit brooches, cross stitch cards, tea bag gift tags and little felt tea pots together.

And because we chose a theme very close to our hearts, it was so exciting to see people adding their own stamp of creativity to the DIY craft kit they’d chosen.

Thank you to everyone who came along –see you again soon!

Pom pom o'clock

I’ve been a busy bee, making decorations for my niece’s 1st birthday party and have loved every minute of it! Lots of pink, fuss, laughter and the best party food to celebrate one very precious little girl.

To make one pom pom, you’ll need about 100 cake cases, a polystyrene ball, glue gun, a bit of time on your hands and plenty of patience – but definitely definitely worth it.

All stitched up

I love flowers and over the years have enjoyed experimenting with sewing onto paper– so decided to make my own flowery letter headed paper, embellished with my own freestyle embroidery technique.
I got the pattern from the lovely Martha Stewart – find the template here if you fancy having a go yourself!

Mini matchbox bunting

A matchbox of mini bunting I made from tissue paper, washi tape and sparkly stones for my little niece who needed cheering up. I packaged it with lots of other tiny treats and popped it in the post as a surprise.

The British Biscuit Festival

We had a great time creating lots of biscuit-inspired craft kits to share at The British Biscuit Festival at The Brunswick last weekend. We had a lovely space where lots of people got crafty with us, creating many a biscuit inspired creation. More pictures to follow but for now a cup of tea and an edible biscuit or few are called for ...

The biscuit festival

After long time no see, we’ve back on the road again at the weekend and will be taking ‘Crafternoon’ to The British Biscuit Festival, at the Brunswick Bloomsbury WC1, on Saturday 9th June.

We’ve chatted and crafted over many a biscuit, so we’re very excited to be invited along with our bag of tricks. We’ll be there from 12-6pm and we’ve got plenty of biccy-themed craft kits up our sleeve, so if you’re nearby come along and say hello!

Candy Coloured Stripes

I’ve been on the hunt for some candy coloured stripey sheets for quite some time. Word eventually reached my grandma’s neighbour (who was just about to throw said sheets in the bin). Result, I’ve landed myself the perfect lemon yellow, mint green, candy floss pink and cool blue combo and decided for their first outing that they’d make a nice looking bow.

Thank you grandma’s neighbour.

Bags of fun

After a recent Topshop purchase, I couldn't resist turning their lovely big black and white printed bag into my own smaller, sweet-shop-style creations. The perfect goodie bags for housing a few happy crafting essentials. If you like the sound of a bit of cutting + sticking yourself and making something pretty from virtually nothing, why not come along to our next craft event?

Lets have fun making a mess together!

Your hair looks good today

Matchbox challenge day 17: the sweet one. I prettied up a matchbox with floral paper, an old map, washi tape and some dotty birthday paper. The box contains a collection of stickers I typed out that say nice things, including "I like your handwriting", "Can I hold your hand?" and "I like your socks".

What's the sweetest thing you've ever told someone or they've told you?

Out of my thoughts

Matchbox challenge day eight - the music one. Lovely lyrics from a song sung in the film "Before sunset" transferred onto heart-shaped pebble. (I've just watched a clip of the scene and I've got the lyrics wrong! But still, the sentiment remains..!)

A grand day out

We put on our aprons and set-up shop yesterday at Wonderhill market- where we had lots of crafty things we’d made for sale and a few vintage treasures in search of a new home!  It also turned out to be the perfect excuse to have a good old natter, meet lots of lovely stall holders, get-through a bag of lemon bon-bons (with a nice dusting, just like they used to be) and enjoy countless cups of tea, whilst playing shop (next to a very delicious cake stall might I add). And to be honest, the best part of all was spending an afternoon with my sidekick, Thelma!

Bonjour

The theme for day five of the Matchbox challenge is 'the French one' and for some reason I really struggled with the theme today. I tried all kinds of things, but ended up creating this which just felt 'right' - albeit not very French! The key is really special to me, and sort of tied into my heart, so it's a personal little creation that I'll treasure.

Chantilly lace

Day four of the Matchbox challenge, today's theme is 'Lace'.

I used a long description of different kinds of lace and how they're made then played around with the words onscreen before printing them onto brown wrap and covered the matchbox with it. I decided this box would house my diminishing collection of brown paper hearts, which happen to be very precious to me. The box is also tied with some lace Louise gave to me which I love.

Many happy returns

Day three of the Matchbox Challenge, the theme was 'The birthday one'. I used a big matchbox and wrapped it like a present, and put some miniature birthday bunting and a little note inside.

A little birdie told me...

Day two of the Matchbox challenge, today's theme is 'The bird one'. I found this little "Robin Club" brooch in a jar of buttons I picked up a while ago, I was so happy to find this little chap as robin's are my favourite birds. So it was the perfect excuse to make a little nest to keep him in.

Library (sketch) book

I joined the Sketchbook Project a few months back and yesterday sent it off my finished sketchbook to join the tour before it goes to live at the Brooklyn Art Library forever. It was pretty weird posting it to NYC knowing that people I've never met will be thumbing through it and getting a tiny insight into my world and I might never hold my creation in my hands again*. My theme was "Forever in a nutshell" - what the images above have to do with that, I have no idea, but I thought I'd share them anyway.

Thelma x

* Well, this isn't strictly true, because one day I will go and visit it and all the others. It's a great excuse to go to New York, if nothing else.

Par avion

I've signed up to take part in the February Matchbox a day challenge which has been set up on the beautiful Lobster & Swan site. This is my debut creation, the theme was 'airmail'. I'm going to be doing this every single day this month along with lots of other people who are joining in - check out all the creations here. Having bought a big box of old matchboxes recently with no real reason to, this is giving me the perfect excuse to breath much needed new life into them.

Feels so good to be a rose

Making these rosy pegs made me one happy lady. And the fact that they bloomed from a few left-overs from our last craft event, made me even happier. You just never know when a stripy strip of paper sitting lonely on the floor might come in use! So I tend not to throw anything away - and often think 'I'll have that'.

They were so simple to put together (paper + scalpel + glue) and I couldn't resist finishing them off with the prettiest of paper flowers. I don't know about you, but i'd feel very happy to be a rose!

Just for fun

Here’s a peek into what our lovely crafters got upto at our ‘Just for fun’ event on Sunday. Mothers came with their daughters, boyfriends brought along their girlfriends – and in between filling-up teacups and chatting to our guests, we were so happy to see the amazing creations people made from our DIY craft kits.

Thank you so much to everyone who came along! We’re hoping to put on lots more dates for 2012 – so we'll keep you posted and lets make it a crafty year to remember!

D is for...

...Dalmatian bows! This (slightly random) idea hatched from a series of happy moments over the Christmas break:
  • Learning to make these pretty bows.
  • Raiding my Grandma's cupboards for vintage playing cards, realising her never-ending stash was just what I was looking for and much to my delight was mostly made up of novelty animals.
  •  Discovering a lovely old-fashioned (and pristine) set of the A-Z letter game Lexicon in the window of my favourite charity shop back 'Up North', which will make the perfect T&L signage solution for our future crafty events.
I'm not quite sure what i'm going to do with the Dalmatian family yet, but they look happy enough for the time being. Thelma and I have got lots of exciting things planned for 2012- so i'm sure they'll make an appearance at some point!

Happy new year!

The perfect companion for those cosy wintery nights curled up on the sofa.

Some bits and bobs I made for Louise (with a few extra little things I got via the creative peeps at the Poundshop)

Homemade goodies I gave to my nearest and dearest for Christmas

So, I almost kept the promise I made here on this blog in November to make everyone's Christmas presents, cards and wrapping paper this year.

Time ran away with me and with only a day to go, I hadn't made anything. Cue panic stations! Well, there's nothing like a tight deadline to get the creative juices flowing. So I put my prized collection of jars to good use and filled them with hot chocolate, homemade cookies, sweets and cowgirl cookie mixture. Typed labels, tags and Christmas wishes at great speed (spot the spelling mistakes!) and got them wrapped and under the tree just in time. I did end up buying a few things, but the homemade goodies went down really well, so I'm sure with a bit more time and better planning I can banish a dash down the high street on Christmas eve this year.

I also wanted to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who has supported us in the past year, we couldn't have done it without you. We love setting up these events and seeing what people create, whilst eating, drinking and being merry. The people who come and join in seem to enjoy it as much as we do, so it's smiles all round.

Here's to a very happy (and crafty) new year to one and all!
